I wanted to say a few things about Moto Mail - By Cpl Michael Bodenstein
When I first heard about Moto Mail it almost seemed too good to be true and then once I got into Iraq the first couple weeks I was already receiving MotoMail messages from my family and friends.  It took two or three weeks for a written letter to reach my parents or friends and email access wasn't readily available to us.  I was in a team of six Marines and one Iraqi translator.  We spent the majority of our time away from main bases on forward operating bases "FOB's" or "BP's" battle positions.  There was no mail call until we went to a main base such as Fallujah or Al Quaim.  It was there when the MotoMail messages started pouring in.  It seemed like every day I was receiving MotoMail and it was within 24 or 48 hours that I got these letters from my family and friends.  Getting any piece of mail was something we looked forward to.  It doesn't matter how tough you think you are, mail was a special moment for any Marine or Soldier in a combat zone.  It's in movies, it's in country songs about letters being written to loved ones in war.  Getting a MotoMail was something that brought us out of the intense environment we were in and for a few minutes to reflect, and think about the special people in our lives, the ones we were serving to protect.

Before going to Iraq getting a letter in the mail wasn't that big of a deal, but once our boots hit the ground and we realized how far away from home we were those MotoMail messages became doses of smiles, laughter, tears and just good memories.  I guess you would have to experience Iraq to understand the incredible affect of receiving mail has on any Marine or Soldier.  It's a Morale booster for sure and many of times lifted my spirits.  I didn't have to wait 3 weeks to get a letter, I was waiting just a day or two until we left again for the battle position we lived on.  Using MotoMail should be available to all soldiers in any combat zone or combat designated country.  Just like we give soldiers body armor to wear for protection, words of encouragement from a letter help as well.  For me receiving mail was something I cherished every time I opened any mail no matter who it was from.
I remember reading some of my MotoMails over and over again just to get that feeling of being back home even if it was just for a few minutes.  I even let my buddies read some that were sent because they had a good joke in it or just a common memory of being at home.

MotoMail is a blessing to any family or person who has a loved one overseas.  This is definitely something that All branches of the military need to have full access to.  Thank you for the opportunity to share my story about MotoMail.  It came when the times were tough and I needed some encouraging words.  It came when I needed it the most!

Thank you MotoMail!
